Members are the lifeblood of any non-profit organization.
After analyzing the results of our very successful member survey this winter, we were encouraged to learn that membership in the Comox Valley Community Arts Council is valuable and relevant to many people.
A majority of respondents supported the idea of an increase in annual membership fees - which have remained the same for over a decade - as well the possibility of tiered memberships with additional services.
Membership is vital to the growth & sustainability of the Arts Council. Through long-term membership commitments from a large number of local cultural workers (artists of all genres, arts administrators, presenters, producers, staff) as well as community members who simply want to show their support for the value of the arts, we will be able to reduce our dependency on government funding.
It is paramount on our agenda & in our strategic plan to create new revenue streams in order to secure our future. Both through contributions from our community, and earned income by providing services, we can do that! Reliance on government funding simply isn't a good long-term strategy.
Our simplest approach is to expand our membership - both in value and numbers. To that end, we are revising our membership policy as a whole, and will be rolling out new tiers for January 1 2015.
Why become a member?
The number one reason to purchase an Arts Council Membership is to support the growth, promotion and advocacy of the arts in the Comox Valley. Why would you do that? Because you understand the intrinsic value of the arts in our day-to-day lives.
Membership is a primary source for general operating revenue - it's not restricted by grant criteria, and it can be used for any and all programs that we develop, as well as cover costs for administration - and we can't deliver anything without the staff and infrastructure to do it!
After that, you might choose to join because you are a practicing artist of some genre - many people believe that the Arts Council is visual-art centric. We are working to dispel that myth - we work for ALL artists.. in every genre... if you create or work in the cultural sector, we are here for you!
If you're not a practicing artist, you might choose to join because you'd like to BECOME a practicing artist, and are looking for assistance and opportunities to learn, grow, advance and discover your own artistic abilities. Through our network, and our professional development programming, you can gain access to tools and skills that will help you with that.
New Membership Basics
[success]As of July 1, 2014 Annual Membership will be $40, and membership will be based on calendar year, January 1 – December 31.
If you purchase a full price membership between July 1 – December 31 2014, it will be good til December 31, 2015. All existing $20 memberships will expire at the end of this year.[/success]
For the remainder of 2014 we will be building capacity and devising serviceable options that we can sustain for higher level memberships for working artists, arts organizations, venues and more, as well as building a "sustainer program" for tax-deductible low-monthly-contributions.
