Islands ‘Cruise’ features Laureate hand-off

Comox Valley Poet Laureate Kevin Flesher may be outgoing, but he’s is not going out quietly.

Last Friday, Natalie Nickerson was chosen for the next two-year term as Laureate. Saturday, Flesher will make it official when he pronounces a poem and passes Nickerson “the Eagle Plume Quill of Power” on the Helliwell Bluffs on Hornby Island.

It’s a highlight of Flesher’s Pleasure Cruise Tour of Denman and Hornby Islands, where he and Nickerson will be joined by special guests Two Dope Boys in a Cadillac, reading poetry and asking local “island-bound poets to share their poems with us.”

Travelling in a limousine, they will start off reading at Weinberg's Fine Foods in Buckley Bay at 10:15 a.m., Earth Club Guesthouse on Denman at noon, then Helliwell Park to hand over the official power and title of Poet Laureate, then host a poetry open stage at Hornby’s Cardboard House Bakery at 4 p.m.

They will head back to the big island for a final reading at Royston Pub at 6 p.m.

THERE ARE FOUR seats in the limousine available to bid on. Bidding starts at $40 for each seat (which ultimately covers your transportation costs and a couple treats in the limo), and extra bids support the poet laureate program. To bid, visit the facebook event page!

Anyone is welcome to come along on the tour, or to provide poems at any of the readings, but must provide their own transportation. (Unless successful in winning a limo seat!)
