Celebrate our region’s history and heritage at the Cumberland Heritage Faire, the Cumberland Lantern Festival, and at a special event taking place at the Cumberland Museum and Archives on Saturday, February 17th.
Currently in its 16th year, the Cumberland Heritage Faire offers a fun filled day of music, food and entertainment for the whole family. Explore a wide range of displays from organizations and private collections including the Comox Valley Ukrainian Cultural Society, the Comox Air Force Museum, HAMM – the HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial, Denman Island Lace Makers, the Cumberland Fire Department, Comox Valley Genealogy, and more. Enjoy family – friendly entertainment from the Old Time Fiddlers, Joanna Finch, David Somers, Time for Uke, the Barbershop Quartet, and other surprises! Enjoy the Heritage Faire concession with delicious homemade lunch items available on site. The Faire takes place from 10am to 4pm in the Cumberland OAP Hall at 1st Street and Dunsmuir Avenue. Admission is by donation.
Coinciding with the Heritage Faire is the Cumberland Lantern Festival. Between 10am and 4pm, participants of all ages can enjoy walking a labyrinth illuminated with paper and glass lanterns at the Cumberland Masonic Hall. Then, at 6:15pm, gather for the annual Lantern Parade. Join a lively procession led by the Golden Honey Second Line marching band, leaving from the Village Square and proceeding to Village Park. Entertainment by Fired Up – Cumberland’s Community Fire Performers, as well as the popular sky lantern release will take place in the park, weather permitting.
The Cumberland Museum and Archives is open by donation from 10am to 5pm with exhibits to explore and our famed replica coal mine. Join us at 11am to witness the blessing of the Kumugwe mask by K’omoks and Kwakwaka’wakw artist Karver Everson and to celebrate the opening of the new permanent Kumugwe exhibit.
