The Cumberland Forest and friends are hosting a very special concert event on Saturday January 12th with the Aerialists and the Tremblers of 7 at the Cumberland Masonic Hall. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts shortly after 8.
In a world where hyphenated genres are becoming the norm, all kinds of monikers are available for a contemporary folk band - post-folk, trad-core, alt-roots. File under World, or file under Celtic? Aerialists fits best with the beautifully contradictory term prog-trad, melding their ferociously creative harmonic sensibilities with a deep love for folk traditions.
Featuring Scottish harpist Màiri Chaimbeul (Darol Anger & The Furies, Brìghde Chaimbeul), and Canadian neo-folk innovators Adam Iredale-Gray (Fish & Bird) on guitar and Elise Boeur (Jenny Ritter) on fiddle, the transatlantic quintet draws from the wells of Nordic and Gaelic music, adding expansive textures and meticulously sculpted arrangements to create captivating, genre-defying new music.
"A dazzling display of stellar musicianship, inventive arrangements, and genre-melding music inhabiting a world of its own." - Folk Radio UK
"Cunning, exhilarating and at times almost emotionally overwhelming" - Words On Sound
"Entire worlds seem travelled... there is a sense of urgency, lightheartedness, menace, and stillness" - Spill Magazine
Joining the Aerialists for this special double bill are the Tremblers of Sevens, a power duo serve up diametrical elements from across religious and cultural divides and offer a call for peace and sanity in times when both are seemingly rapidly dissipating. Their thing is to carefully pluck gems from the extensive catalogues of vintage folk, blues, and international music (especially klezmer), then plug in, crank it up loud and hammer the material out in a manner, as Wise has previously stated, ‘like Black Sabbath would do it.’ It is truly visceral stuff, and in respect of guitar/drums duos, The White Stripes or The Black Keys this ain’t, but what it is is as raw, as vital, as real, and as punk as it gets.
